Taipei Story
Nominated, Best Actor and Best Cinematography - 1985 Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards
Included in Asian film historian Tony Rayns' top 10 list for Sight and Sound's poll both in 2002 and 2012.
COLORADO PREMIERE
Edward Yang’s second feature, his first masterpiece, solidified him as a distinctive talent among the founders of the New Taiwanese Cinema. Inside a booming, modernizing Taipei a couple begins to unravel. Hou Hsiao-hsien (the other master to come out of the New Wave in a rare on-screen appearance) stars as a former baseball player who fixates on the past while his girlfriend (Yang’s then-girlfriend Tsai Chin) adheres to climbing the corporate ladder in the world of property development. Hopes for the future become ghosts that drift through the city, much like the individuals Yang has turned his gaze upon. Its original title of “Green Plums and a Bamboo Horse” is an idiom relating to childhood sweethearts. Its English title references Ozu’s Tokyo Story, which perfectly evokes Yang’s careful observations of souls displaced within a city in transition. Long since unavailable, Taipei Story has been newly restored by the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project in conjunction with Cineteca di Bologna.
